Hi-lites week of January 24, 2013

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the start of Catholic Schools Week!  We are so fortunate to be part of this wonderful community.  Every day, your child is surrounded by competent and caring teachers, helpful support staff and classmates, who will be their friends for life!  Catholic Schools Week allows us a chance to have fun together, be creative, try new things and break up a long cold month.  Yes, regular classes do happen!

We hope to see everyone at 10:30 am Mass on Sunday, the 27th and Wednesday, the 30th at Noon.  Also, don’t miss the chili dinner. The Traxler Family and Captain Ken’s Chili take good care of us!  We have had a film festival on Friday and hope parents can pop into either showing.  Pull out your skates and find the key and meet us at Saints North.  And DO NOT miss the Swing Kick-Off Party next Friday.  The best time ever!

Being in a Catholic School everyday is to live a blessed life.

Speaking of lunch, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE wash those lunchboxes.  Just throw them in the wash machine.  Empty is best.

“Send a Shout Out!”  Grammatically correct:  “Send Out a Shout!”
This is a fun way to send out a salute to a HCS teacher.  Check out the link below and recognize someone special for Catholic Schools Week.

Engaging encounter!!
Student Jack G recently attended Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and found a little time to talk some baseball with Cardinal Timothy Dolan.  (Hopefully, they were praying for the Twins’ pitching rotation.)  What a thrill!

Prayers from Every Corner
Students have been faithfully praying for former student, Ellie Cizek, who suffered a serious brain injury in a skiing accident.  I am happy to report that Ellie is making tremendous progress, is speaking, can move all of her limbs and has a wonderful health team that will help her on the path to recovery.  Keep praying.  I believe we are seeing a miracle here.

Precious Preschoolers
The HiC Preschool is excited to be back from Christmas break.  It is a busy time for our preschool as we welcome Baby Jesue, new students, and new babies.  We welcome Ava Joan D, Oliver H, and Adele P to our T/Th AM program.  We also welcome Francine "Frannie" Mary C, baby sister of Clara C, and Joshua P, baby brother of Catherine P.
We are enrolling for next year, so please stop in and join the fun.

“Take a Stand and Lend a Hand”
Pictured is second grader, Natalie S, whose artwork was chosen for this year’s school directory.  It makes me smile every time I pick it up!

Message of Thanks:
Dear Jane,
Children and Families of Highland Catholic School,
I cannot begin to thank you for the avalanche of toys and wonderful items you sent for our Christmas bags!  Our families so appreciate the help to get them through the holidays.  The needs in my neighborhood of North Minneapolis are great all year long—And we, Sisters, are here all year long to bring your message of hope.  Have a great rest of the school year.  You are in our daily prayers.
Gratefully,
Sr. Mary Frances and All
Photo: Sr. Mary Frances was in tears.  She is in the middle of the group sporting a turban after recovering from her second brain surgery.

So, How Did it Go?
Folks have been asking about the result of our Barnes and Nobel Fund Raiser, which was about the most fun a person could have in a retail store: music, good conversation, hot chocolate, caroling teachers.
It was a huge success raising $2,074.76!  In-store sales contributed $2,025.96, nook sales  $22.10 and online sales $26.97
Please say we will do it again next year?

Olweus Anti-Bullying Program Policy
The Highland Catholic School Advisory Council supports the implementation of the Olweus Anti-Bullying Program.  This program, which involves the full community of Highland Catholic School, is centered on four rules:

            1.  We will not bully others.
            2.  We will try to help students who are bullied.
            3.  We will try to include students who are left out.
            4.  If we know that someone I being bullied, we will tell an adult at school
                 and an adult at home.
The Olweus Program coupled with our Code of Conduct and Policy for Prohibiting Bullying Behavior speaks to the need for all children to feel safe at school.
It shall be at the discretion of the Principal and Canonical Administrator to apply this policy.

A Preschool Poem
Snow is:
Snow is white.
Snow is cold.
Snow is yucky on the floor.
Grass pops up under the snow.

I can play in the snow.
I can build a snowman in the snow.

Sometimes it’s sticky,
And sometimes it’s not.
Sometimes snow is deep.

We like it a lot!

A Nice Note from a Parishioner after December Coffee
Dear Students,
A heartfelt thank you for the joy that you spread this morning to all of us at your breakfast.  Your student council members made us all feel so welcome.  Your kindergartners are great entertainers.  We are proud of you!!!

With love and gratitude,
Catherine Marien

Around the School

Study of World Religions
The 8th grade welcomed Cassandra Naima Arslan from the Islamic Resource Center to their Religion classes this week.  Mrs. Arslan came to speak about the religion of Islam as part of their world religions studies.  Mrs. Arslan was impressed by the knowledge of the 8th grade students and brought back pictures of their Five Pillars of Islam project to share with her Muslim community members.

First Grade Fun
The Giants are back!  Our first graders are enjoying their reading time with the very tall (and talented) Basketball players from St. Thomas University. Thanks to Coach Johnny Tauer for hooking us up!

More Art….
Congratulations to Karyne O!  She was chosen as the Young Rembrandts Star Artist this month.  You can find her work featured at http://www.youngrembrandts.com/twincities/default.aspx
Just click on the Student Showcase Box.  Highland Catholic School is happy to offer the Young Rembrandt Program to our students.

Asking For...

Is anyone starting their spring cleaning?
We are on the look up for additional Legos for our Extra Innings crowd.  They love them to pieces!
Please send any donations to the office.

We constantly have a need for brown grocery bags.  Please drop them off at the office anytime. They can either be empty or full of cash.

Have any old ink cartridges or cell phones lying around? Bring them in and we will recycle them and earn money for the school.

Alumni News

Congratulations to our former students who were recently recognized for their strong academic achievement at the Academy of Holy Angels: Andy Broadnax, Scholar of Distinction; Will Harens, Scholar of Distinction; Katheryn Murphy, Scholar of Distinction and Fiona O’Rourke, Honor Roll.
We are proud of you.

What a thrill to hear that former student, Amanda Evans, performed as part of the Notre Dame marching band as part of her freshman year!  Amanda posted on facebook a reflection of her early days in 4th grade band!  Just another reminder of the places band can bring you!  Way to go, Amanda!
